Foods have a great range of fat levels. Your typical hamburger patty contains 24 grams of fat per serving, while a serving of shrimp contains about 0.6 grams of fat. Foods that are generally low in fat (chicken or fish, seafood, fruits or vegetables) can be used to balance foods higher in fat.

We invite you to use the food choices listed in this section. All choices contain no more than 10 grams of fat per serving. Keep in mind that the items listed are just a few of the many products we offer at M&M Meat Shops.

Where Does One Find Fat and Calorie Information

Always check the package for nutrition information. It is the responsibility of the food manufacturer to keep the information on the package as accurate as possible.

Understanding Nutrition Information

There are three basic food components that supply your body with energy (or calories). They are protein, fat and carbohydrates. Protein and carbohydrates each supply about four (4) calories of energy for each gram consumed. Fat supplies a total of nine (9) calories for each gram of fat consumed. Many diets are focused on restricting fat or calories.

For a calorie-reduced diet

Just look at the total number of calories the food supplies. This appears under the heading called "energy" on the nutrition information panel on the package.

For a fat-reduced diet

a) When total daily fat is restricted, this is commonly a restriction of 20 to 30 grams of fat per day.
b) When total calories from fat are restricted, the goal is often to eat less than 30% of calories from fat, consumed from all foods eaten over the day.

To determine the percentage of calories from fat, use this formula:

(grams of fat x 9 ÷ calories per portion) x 100

Health Canada's nutritional recommendations state that the typical Canadian diet should include no more than 30% fat from calories. This recommendation refers to 30% fat from calories in ONE DAY whether this fat is consumed in one meal or in several meals throughout the day. This recommendation does not refer to fat percentage from one food-group choice alone.

If you wish to learn more about reducing your daily fat intake and nutrition, speak to your healthcare professional. As well, always read the food labels on products you buy.

Please note that slight variations in the products may occur due to local and regional suppliers, season of the year, and minor changes in the ingredients and the natural differences in the foods themselves. Please be assured that any differences would be slight, as all of our products are made to M&M Meat Shops' strict quality standards.
